This large complex, with a maximum elevation 6,660 m is situated just within Argentina, a few kilometers south of Nevado Ojos del Salado (NODS). It is the third highest active volcano in the world, but remains almost entirely unknown. Cerro Tipas is one of the many centers of this complex, and one of the few for which a name is known. As a result this center has informally been named Nevados de Tipas. Nevados de Tipas is similar to NODS in character and consists of a collection of craters, cones, domes and flows covering an area of about 25 km2 (Figure 44.1 and 44.2). Its youthful morphology, state of preservation, and style of activity, suggests that it may be as active as its better known neighbour.
